MacBook Trackpad Double-Click Speed

MACBOOK JUNKIE’S DOUBLE-CLICK SPEED: FAST

The Trackpad Double-Click Speed setting allows you to adjust the amount of time you require to double-click an item in order to open it. If you don’t perform the full double-click (two clicks) within that time, your Mac will forget your first click and require you to start over.

The faster your double-click speed is set, the faster you will need to double-click on your trackpad. The slower your double-click speed is set, the more time you have to double-click your trackpad.

I initially thought that if I set my double-click speed at the slowest setting, I could double-click as fast or as slow as I wanted. While this is true, when I had my double-click speed set to slow, I was constantly opening files I wasn’t interested in opening. This was happening every time I was perusing the contents of a folder and it was extremely annoying.

I never could figure out exactly what I was doing that caused the files to open and really, I didn’t care. I knew it had to do with my double-click speed so, I bumped back up to the fastest setting (which I had previously determined to be my ideal setting) and haven’t experienced this problem since.

TO DETERMINE YOUR IDEAL DOUBLE CLICK SPEED:

1. Right-click on Finder & open a New Finder Window

2. Navigate to your Home folder.

3. Choose to Show Items as Icons.

4. Open the Trackpad Preferences Pane

5. Move the Double-Click Speed slider all the way over to the right so that it is set at the fastest speed.

6. Leave the Trackpad Preferences pane open and double-click any of the folders in the Finder window.

7. If the folder opened on your first try, you are ready to set your Scrolling Speed or any of the other settings listed at the end of this article.

However, if the folder did not open on your first try, your double-click speed is set too fast. Move the slider one notch to the left and try to double-click the folder again. If the folder still does not open on your first try, keep bumping the speed down one notch and testing until your folder opens on your first attempt to double-click.

Now that you have determined your ideal Double-Click speed, it’s time to set your Scrolling Speed or any of these other Trackpad settings:
